The Ministry of Agriculture, together with the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, is hosting a three-day National Women in Agriculture Symposium, bringing together leaders, farmers, policymakers, and community representatives to discuss ways to strengthen women’s participation in the agricultural sector.
Women play a critical role in Fiji’s farms, fisheries, forests, and rural enterprises. From planting crops and managing small family farms to running small businesses and leading community initiatives, women contribute significantly to food production, economic growth, and community well-being. Yet, despite their vital role, many women still face barriers that limit their participation in economic activities.
On the opening day, Permanent Secretary for Information, Eseta Nadakuitavuki served as a panelist, highlighting the importance of digital inclusion and leadership development for women in rural communities.
She also highlighted the value of institutional support for women’s cooperatives, noting that when women are organised and supported through cooperative structures, they are better positioned to contribute to policy discussions, strengthen rural enterprises, and influence decisions that affect their communities. She stated that the Ministry of Information is strengthening women’s digital skills and leadership training so they can better access opportunities, share knowledge, and participate in decision-making processes.
Women contributing to Fiji’s farms, fisheries, forests and rural enterprises play a vital role in strengthening the nation’s food security, economic growth and community well-being. Every day, women across the country demonstrate resilience and leadership — whether planting crops, managing small businesses, processing food or leading community initiatives — helping shape a stronger and more sustainable future for Fiji.
PS Nadakuitavuki also stated that collective participation and collaboration among women can transform the agricultural sector—making it more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.
The National Women in Agriculture Symposium provides an important platform to celebrate women’s contributions while identifying practical solutions that empower them to thrive.
By investing in women, supporting their leadership, and removing barriers to participation, Fiji continues to move toward a stronger, more equitable agricultural future for all.
