The Minister for Policing and Communications, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, visited Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) to reinforce the Government’s expectations for strong, future-ready telecommunications infrastructure that supports national security, public services, and inclusive digital development.
During the visit, the Minister met with TFL Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Charles Goundar, and the senior management team, where he thanked TFL for its strategic foresight and sustained investment in fibre infrastructure that forms the backbone of Fiji’s digital connectivity.
Hon. Naivalurua acknowledged TFL’s role in delivering fibre backbone, fibre broadband and 5G services, noting that such investments are essential to improving service quality, reliability, and access for households, businesses, and government operations. He encouraged TFL to continue on this trajectory and to work closely with the Ministry on universal connectivity and national infrastructure projects, particularly in underserved areas.
Mr. Goundar briefed the Minister on TFL’s key initiatives, including the expansion of fibre-to-the-home coverage, the modernisation of fibre networks across Viti Levu, and projects supporting the Fiji Police Force, such as the rollout of a national CCTV camera network.
TFL also highlighted its investment in in-house certified training programmes, underscoring the importance of developing local technical expertise to address skills shortages and ensure long-term network sustainability.
The Minister later visited TFL’s Network Operations Centre, where he addressed staff and expressed his appreciation for their commitment in developing Fiji’s telecommunication infrastructure. He emphasised the critical role of operational teams in maintaining network resilience, particularly during the cyclone season, and stressed the importance of preparedness and rapid response to safeguard essential communications services.
The visit reaffirms Government’s commitment to working in partnership with key operators like TFL to strengthen Fiji’s digital infrastructure, expand universal connectivity, and enhance national resilience.
