FIJI LAUNCHES FIRST FAMILY FOCUS PROGRAM TO SUPPORT OVERSEAS WORKERS

10/02/2026

The first-ever Fiji Family Focus Program has been launched to strengthen support systems for Fijian overseas workers and their families, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to safe, dignified, and family-centred labour mobility.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Government of Fiji, the Australian Government, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and focuses on improving family preparedness, financial literacy, and social wellbeing.

Minister for Employment, Hon. Agni Deo Singh, said the program recognises the sacrifices families make when loved ones take up employment abroad.

“Thousands of Fijians leave home each year to create better futures for their families. This program ensures families are equipped with the financial skills, resilience, and support needed to navigate the challenges of separation while maximising the benefits of overseas employment,” Minister Singh said.

He stressed the importance of budgeting, safe savings practices, and protection from scams, while calling for respectful and violence-free homes and stronger action to safeguard young people from drugs.

Australian High Commissioner H.E. Peter Roberts welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step in strengthening labour mobility programmes and supporting worker families across the region.

IOM Chief of Mission Mr. Solomon Kantha reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to safe and responsible migration, noting the program will initially support 50 workers and their families through training in communication, emotional resilience, long-term financial planning, and reintegration.

The Minister also acknowledged the support of approved employers, community leaders, and families, emphasising that strong partnerships remain central to the program’s success.

The Fiji Family Focus Program marks a key milestone in enhancing Fiji’s labour mobility framework — ensuring overseas employment delivers lasting benefits not only for workers, but for their families and communities as well.
